As the population grows, the globe warms up and natural disasters occur, water scarcity is a problem that the world needs to face now. According to UNICEF, four billion people — more than half of the world’s population — experience severe water scarcity for at least one month each year. In addition, half of the world’s population could be living in areas facing water scarcity by as early as 2025.
How did we get to this point?
There are several plausible explanations for why we are so short of drinking water; however, there is no single direct cause of this problem. From the mass production of industrial goods (it takes 22 gallons of water to make one pound of plastic, for example), to changes in humans’ diet, to insufficient water infrastructure, to population growth, many factors brought us to this situation. To make matters worse, a large portion of the world’s drinking water is lost through leaks in water pipes.
All these factors have played a part in making drinking water more scarce than it should be. But the good news is that we can make changes to make things better. We can use innovative technology and better awareness to conserve and recycle water and eliminate water insecurity once and for all.
How do we fix the problem?
Consuming less water each day by having shorter showers, eating a more plant-based lifestyle, and buying fewer consumer products will all help decrease the water footprint. However, it will take more than a small group of individuals to make a difference. With climate change taking its toll, we need a movement. One way we can make real change is to advance water purification technology to aid us in giving fresh drinking water to the world.
