Water is one of the most essential resources for life. It is vital for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and irrigating crops. Yet, water is often taken for granted. Unsustainable water management practices and a lack of access to water and sanitation can lead to water shortages, water pollution, and an increased risk of water-borne diseases.
What are the UN Sustainable Goals?
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
All United Nations Member States adopted the 17 SDGs in 2015 as a universal agenda for peace and development. The SDGs cover a wide range of issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, environment, and climate change.
While the goals are interdependent, each one has its own targets and indicators to track progress. The SDGs are an ambitious but achievable blueprint that offers a road map for a better and more sustainable future for all.
Water and sanitation for all
Step 6 in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. According to the United Nations, water scarcity already affects more than 40 percent of the global population. And by 2025, it is estimated that 1.8 billion people will live in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and 2/3 of the world’s population could be living under water-stressed conditions.
Step 6 calls for the achievement of a number of targets globally by 2030, including:
- universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all
- access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all
- halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally
- substantially increasing water-use efficiency across all sectors
- sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity
- expanding international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies
- Supporting and strengthening the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management
One way to help address water scarcity is through better water management practices. This can involve improving water conservation and water recycling, as well as incorporating water-saving technologies into water systems. By doing so, we can work towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Purafy’s mission to help
Tackling water scarcity is an essential step in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. And Purafy is a company that is working to help address this issue with the belief that access to clean water should be available to all.
Purafy’s water treatment technology uses graphene to filter water more efficiently and with less energy than traditional water treatment methods. This not only helps to conserve water, but also reduces the amount of wastewater produced.
Purafy’s business operations are focused on developing and commercializing products and technologies that utilize graphene to provide superior filtration for water. By incorporating technologies, we can help to make a difference in the fight against water scarcity. With better water management practices, water can be used more sustainably and efficiently, making it available for all.
Through concerted efforts by governments, businesses, communities, and individuals, we can help ensure that everyone has access to clean water and adequate sanitation – not just for today, but for generations to come. With greater awareness about the link between water scarcity and our health and wellbeing, we can take steps to protect this precious resource and ensure a more sustainable future for all.
